Kelly Slater wins his eight world title in Mundaka

Kelly Slater ended all calculations and clinched his eighth world title at the Billabong Pro Mundaka in Spain. It was a fairytale script for the 34-year-old Floridian who took the 2006 crown by defeating Australian world number four Joel Parkinson in the semifinals. Win over Parkinson was all that Slater needed in the 1m waves after title challenger and world number two Taj Burrow from Australia failed to progress in the quarterfinal.

The winer of the event was Californian tour rookie Bobby Martinez who put and end to Slater's dream script in the final, flying past his countryman to score his second win for 2006. But Slaters second palce was by far enough to crown him World Surfing Champion 2006.
